Cycle archetypes.

ReturnKit's Body tab offers two lenses on the same cycle data: the scientific view (hormones, energy curve, day count) and the archetype view (Crone, Maiden, Mother, Enchantress). Same day. Two ways to notice where you are.

Archetypes are a reflective lens for noticing rhythm, not a rule. They are not medical advice, not a personality test, and not instructions for who you must be today. If an archetype name does not fit, ignore it. Your felt sense wins.

Where this comes from

The four names draw on feminine wisdom traditions popularised by authors like Demetra George (Mysteries of the Dark Moon) and Jean Shinoda Bolen (Goddesses in Everywoman). ReturnKit maps them onto the four hormonal phases you already track, so the archetype view stays tied to your actual cycle math, not a generic calendar.

Menstrual phase · Crone

Rest / release

The blood-time. Energy is low and that is the point. Permission to do less. Trust what comes up in the quiet.

Lean into: stillness, slow walks, releasing what is done, listening inward.

Watch for: pushing through, overriding the body, performing through pain.

Follicular phase · Maiden

Beginnings / clarity

Energy is returning. Good for planning, light starts, curiosity, and gentle momentum.

Lean into: fresh ideas, small steps, learning, beginning things you have been putting off.

Watch for: overcommitting, rushing, seeking validation, taking on more than you can finish.

Ovulatory phase · Mother

Visibility / connection

Peak energy. Outward-facing. Real conversations, leadership, showing up for the work that needs your fullest presence.

Lean into: pitching, leading meetings, hard conversations, deep work that asks for stamina.

Watch for: burning energy on people-pleasing, saying yes to everything because you can.

Luteal phase · Enchantress

Intuition / boundaries

Inward-turning, discerning, sometimes sharp. The bullshit detector is on. Use it.

Lean into: editing, finishing, deep solo work, listening to what is not working, drawing lines.

Watch for: self-criticism becoming cruelty, perfectionism, isolation, doom-scrolling instead of resting.

How to use it in ReturnKit

  1. Open Body → Cycle today.
  2. Set your last period start date if you have not already.
  3. Toggle Archetypes beside the scientific Cycle view.
  4. Read today's archetype as a posture check, not a command. Pair it with your quick check-in (flow, pain, energy, mood).
